Wild Wadi - 2013

Only in Dubai that you go swimming in December. And not just swimming, you go on water slides too. 

Two days ago we went to Wild Wadi (for those who are not familiar, it is one of the best water parks in the UAE). In my 11 years here, I have been to Wild Wadi about 5 times. If it wasn't THAT expensive, I would go there every month! Anyway, my last visit was in 2010. 

A lot has changed since then. 


First, the old Jumeirah Sceirah has been replaced by two new slides. It's basically the same type of slide but upgraded. I once braved the old Jumeirah Scierah. Because I believe in trying things at least once in your life, I never tried the slide again.

The 32 meter high open air slide where I literally felt my heart stop. At the end of the slide, I spent at least 5 minutes trying to remove the rest of my shorts from my butt. It's definitely a story that I will tell my grand children (and they probably won't believe me).

Anyway, my brother tried the new Jumeirah Sceirah and he swears that my experience with the old slide is nothing compared to the new one. Well, I guess being inside a tube adds to the excitement. Too bad we were not able to capture the moment. He wasn't allowed to bring his waterproof phone while on the slide.

Other new slides we tried were the Burj Surj and Tantrum Alley.  So proud of my nephews who braved these awesome rides!

As much as I want to say I enjoyed the day, there were also some unpleasant experience in Wild Wadi. Not with the slides and attractions but with the life guards.

When it was our turn for the Burj Surj, my nephews got on the "tube" first. For some reason the life guard moved the tube closer to the mouth of the slide before my brother, and I got in. Naturally the boys got scared! They thought they will be doing the slide alone. I saw the fear in their eyes and then this life guard angrily shouted at them that she was just moving the tube, and we will join them in a second. That is no way how to handle a scared child!! She was lucky I was in not in the mood for a fight otherwise she would not hear the end of that!

Another incident was when my nephew and I got on the Master Blasters. It was our second round when our tube got stuck going inside the Tunnel of Doom. As if getting stuck in front of many people is not mortifying enough, plus add the fact that I just lost a million cool aunt points, the life guard kept saying, "lift your bum! lift your bum!!" --- very loudly!

And that was not all! I told him that my bum is "lifted" and his response was: "yes, its lifted because I told you so!". WTH?! First of all, I know how to ride, this is not my first time! Second, a little courtesy won't hurt anyone, you know!?

The life guards at Wild Wadi used to be fun. Now they're just grumpy. I heard one guest saying she wasn't impressed with Wild Wadi and that Aquaventure is better simply because the life guards were polite and friendly. I think she's right.

  1. I've been to Wild Wadi a few times too but have not encountered rude lifeguards. They are pretty active on social media, maybe you should send them the link to this article. They're not cheap so they better up their service or else lose customers. They are not the only water park in the UAE right now.

  2. @Grace - this is the first time I've experienced this. I know they used to be really fun. But I can't get over the fact that this lady life guard (who is kabayan!!) shouted at my nephews. It was her fault anyway, she should have told them properly that she's just going to move the tube BEFORE actually moving the tube!

    I tagged them on my tweet. Let's see what happens. And yes, they're expensive considering there are newer water parks around for almost the same price.

      Thanks for taking time to read my feedback. Our day was memorable indeed. It was fun with a few glitches. I did not bother to act on the incident on the spot as I do not want to ruin the day for my nephews. I just hope your staff would be more courteous when talking to guests especially the children.
